Preventive medicine and the environment

It wouldn’t be right to talk about Preventive Medicine without talking about what surrounds us, and has a decisive influence on the health of a community, a fundamental part of human health. Ecology and human health Ecology is the science that studies interrelations between organisms and their environment.

Human ecology is the suitable or unsuitable dynamic balance between man and the surrounding environment. Health and ecology must always be assessed conjointly, both due to the influence of different environmental factors on man, and man’s ability to act on the environment, either favourably or unfavourably. There is a great variety of environmental factors that can have an influence on us: Physical Factors: pressure, temperature, etc.

Chemical Factors: pollutants, foods, etc. Biological Factors: microorganisms, parasites, etc. Social Factors: family, professional, etc. Phycological Factors: cultural, behavioural, etc. The environment takes action on health in the troposphere (atmospheric space in immediate contact with the earth’s crust), where our life and activities normally take place and where different factors have an influence on the appearance of contagious and non-contagious diseases. In the most advanced countries, most basic health deficiencies of environmental origin have been eliminated, but new issues, especially related to the greenhouse effect, have emerged.

The atmosphere plays a protective role, keeping all the energy emitted by the planet from being lost in space. For this reason, to the extent possible, it is very important to reduce substance that destroy the stratospheric ozone (ozone layer). In prior editions, we have discussed important issues, such as the Environment, Atmospheric Pollution, Climate Change and its social, economic and health repercussions, as well as Geo-environmental Health. In this edition, we provide further information with different articles, highlighting the importance of prevention.
