Temporomandibular Joint problems

Is this problem exclusive to teeth?

Many patients suffer every day, from the moment they wake up in the morning, from mouth problems, headaches, fatigued chewing muscles, etc. It is highly probably that this is a Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) problem. Said joint disorder can cause long-term problems, such as wear on the death and orofacial pain that modify the patient’s quality of life.

Temporomandibular dysfunction, which is the technical name, is normally first treated by dentists with an intra-oral device called temporomandibular orthosis (the most common name is a night guard). Many people think that going to the dentist is enough treatment-wise to cease the orofacial pain. However, as dentists, are we able to guarantee a solution to temporomandibular dysfunction? The answer is NO.

The temporomandibular joint is a unique joint in the human body. It is extremely complex and is constantly being remodelled and adapted on a day-to-day basis. The aetiology of temporomandibular dysfunction is multi-factor. It is rarely associated with mouth problems such as occlusion, for example, alone, and the solution lies not only with dentists, but also with other health professionals such as maxillofacial surgeons, physiotherapists, endocrinologists, radiologists and psychologists. If you suspect you suffer from a similar or the same problem as described, and to improve your quality of life, you should see your dental practitioner as soon as possible for a thorough TMJ exam and a personalised treatment plan.
