Above all, Paddle Tennis is not limited to any specific age group. Neither is it a complicated sport, thus preventing it by being enjoyed by everyone. I personally, have seen it being played by 5 and 10 year olds. In terms of technique, it is an individual sport but is does require teamwork. It is played in pairs; therefore it is important that the skill level of each pair is similar, otherwise the opposing pair will always target the "weaker" player during a game.
The beauty of Paddle and one of it's best characteristics is that matches can be arranged with others of a similar skill profile. Therefore, from day one you can experience the enjoyment of a good, competetive game. You set the standard.
I always respond light-heartedly, when someone asks me about Paddle " have you played with wooden racquets on the beach? . . . well it's very similar but played on a small tennis court!" Another advantage of this sport compared with other racquet sports like Tennis, is that it doesn't require much initial skill in order to start practicing.
You won't spend all day chasing after balls. Once you try it, you will see that it is very easy to play. Obviously, there are tricks and the ball bouncing off walls can be dizzying but these skills come with practice. Don't worry, you will get the hang of it in time.
For now, I can assure you that it is a great deal of fun right from the start.
Paddle is not an elitist sport. Nowadays, it is a very widespread sport involving men, women and children and it's popularity is increasing in leaps and bounds. You will not have any difficulty in finding Paddle courts in urbanisations, private clubs, municiple sports centres. . . etc.
Given the high price of building land at the moment, even the size of the court has aided it's popularity, being smaller than required for many other sports. Apart from the court, all you need are your paddles. They are easy to find in any shopping centre or sports store and they are available in a large variety of qualities, prices and thicknesses. . . etc
To start off with, my advice is to purchase an affordable paddle for around 10€. In time, you can decide which type of paddle best suits your style of play. I would once more encourage you to give this sport a try. I am certain that, just like me, you will end up hooked and passionate about it.
Try it and you will see!
