Preventive medicine

Preventive medicine is that discipline within medicine which is responsible for preventing illnesses by means of a combination of medical activities and advice.

Nowadays, efficient healthcare cannot be conceived without preventive medicine. The popular saying “prevention is better than cure”, is at the very root of efficient, effective healthcare. Preventive medicine offers diverse facets, depending on the evolution of the illness, and we can establish three types of prevention:

PRIMARY PREVENTION refers to the processes carried out before a particular illness appears. It is base on the promotion and protection of health, both in the individual and in his or her surroundings, including a healthy environment, eating habits, suitable physical exercise and so on.

Part of this type of prevention includes campaigns against specific illnesses (those related to smoking, alcohol, and flu for example) and strategies designed for the same, such as vaccines and prophylactic treatments.

One of the instruments for promoting healthcare and form preventive action is HEALTHCARE EDUCATION, which involves training the individual to acquire the basic knowledge, attitudes, and habits for the defence and promotion of individual and collective health. The goal is to improve peoples health, by teaching them to take on healthy lifestyles and enabling them to control high-risk situations and avoid them and their consequences.
