
Migraines are vascular headaches. They are characterised by repeated episodes of pain, pulsatile and usually unilateral. They vary in importance, frequency and duration. They are often accompanied by photophobia and phonophobia. Nausea and vomiting are frequent.
They occur more frequently in women and with an important genetic predisposition (70 – 90% of family history).
What are the triggers?
- It is important to know the factors that cause migraines to know how to prevent them:
- Stress and distress situations maintained (emotional tension).
- Hormonal changes, especially premenstrual.
- The excesses of light and sound. Pay attention to light and sound equipment such as TV, tablets, etc.
- Inadequate rest, therefore, it is required to rest a sufficient number of hours. Excess is also harmful.
- Not eating sufficient quantity or at a regular time.
- Foods rich in vasoactive substances: cheeses, yogurt, nuts, chocolate, alcoholic beverages, sausages, condiments, etc.
- High blood pressure
- Vasoactive medications, especially for hormonal therapies, especially contraceptives.
What can we do when we are suffering from migraine?
- It is advisable to be sufficiently hydrated.
- It is good to rest in a dark area and as quietly as possible.
- It relieves placing a cloth of cold water on the head.
